What Is the Best Period to Cycle in Romania and Transylvania?
Romania offers a surprisingly long cycling season, but the best period for a multi-day cycling holiday is generally between April and October. This is the time when we run our tours at Transylvania Cycling, during daylight saving time, when the days are longer and the weather is warm enough for comfortable riding.
Long daylight hours make a real difference. They allow relaxed mornings, scenic stops along the way, and time to fully enjoy rural guesthouses and historic towns in the evenings. Outside this period, there can certainly be beautiful days - even in late autumn or early spring - that are perfect for shorter one-day rides. However, for structured multi-day tours, especially those including mountain roads, April to October offers the most reliable conditions.
Weather in Romania varies by region. The south and east of the country are generally warmer in summer and can experience stronger heat, particularly in July and August. Transylvania, being more hilly and surrounded by forests and the Carpathian Mountains, tends to have a more enjoyable climate for cycling. The slightly higher elevation and forest cover help moderate temperatures, making even mid-summer rides more comfortable than in flatter southern areas.
Many cyclists consider May and June the most beautiful months. Nature is at its greenest, meadows are full of wildflowers, and the long daylight hours create ideal riding conditions. The trade-off is that this period can bring more summer rain showers. These are often short and refreshing, but flexibility is important.
From July onward, the weather becomes hotter and generally drier. Temperatures can reach 30°C, especially during heat waves. Mountain roads such as the famous Transfăgărășan and Transalpina are fully open and at their best during this time. August and September are typically the busiest months, as many Romanians are also on holiday. The weather is stable, rainfall is less frequent, and by September the evenings start to become pleasantly chilly, adding a fresh feeling to morning climbs.
In the end, there is no single perfect month - only the right balance for your preferences. If you enjoy lush green landscapes and don’t mind occasional showers, late spring is ideal. If you prefer stable, warmer weather and high mountain access, mid to late summer works very well. What remains constant throughout the April to October season is the diversity of landscapes, quiet rural roads, and a climate that makes Transylvania one of the most enjoyable regions in Europe for cycling.
